One
woman in every eight either has or will develop breast cancer
in her lifetime. When a woman receives a diagnosis of breast cancer,
she has an immediate need for information. Women in northern Michigan
can get that information with one phone call to Breast Health
Services Coordinator Jane Rolf.
Munson Medical Center has established a 24-hour-a-day,
7-day-a-week Breast Health Information Line at (231)
935-8330. Jane answers that line during business hours.
Nights and weekends she receives an automatic page and will return
calls within 10 minutes. "We'll be able to answer questions
right away, or if we don't have the answer, we have vast resources
that we can turn to for help," says Jane.
Jane is an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with advanced
certification in Medical Surgical Nursing. She is also a Certified
Breast Health Specialist. In 2001, Jane received one of Munson
Healthcare's most prestigious awards the James Stephen
Memorial Quality Award presented annually to an employee
who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to quality.
As the Breast Health Services Coordinator, Jane
is a caring link between a patient and members of the medical
community involved in that patient's care, including the primary
care physician, radiologist, surgeon, oncologist, nurses, and
others. She is available to provide education and support services,
before, during, and after surgery to promote coping mechanisms
for both the patient and family.
Jane also coordinates and supports all breast cancer
related programs and committees, including the Navigator
Program, Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Program, Breast Surgery
Pathway, Breast
Cancer Support Group, and the Lymphedema Network of Northern
Michigan.
Jane's other duties include:
Standardizing patient education on breast cancer to ensure
that all patients receive the same high quality information
at the time of diagnosis.
Development of a multidisciplinary breast conference to allow
physicians to bring cases to a review board to discuss treatment
options.
Attendance at community health fairs to provide education
on breast health.
Organization of the Breast Health Fair at the annual Remembrance
Run.
