A Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)
refers to an impaired ability to receive, interpret, or use information
that is heard. An individual might be able to detect a series
of tones, but may not be able to recognize that they occur in
a certain pattern. The specific nature of the sound processing
problem is established through a group of tests, determined by
the individual's history and specific needs. Below are some common
behaviors associated with CAPD:
Behavior problems
Below expected academic performance
Easily distracted by background noise
Difficulty with phonics, speech sounds, spelling,
and/or reading
Not listening
Testing is available for adults and children ages
five and up. For more information, call (231) 935-6455.
