Osteoporosis
is the most common disease affecting the bones. It occurs when the density of bone in the body decreases, leaving the remaining bone weak. Serious fractures may occur, causing pain, loss of an independent and active lifestyle, and even death.
Osteoporosis was once thought to be an unavoidable part of aging, particularly for women, but we now know this disease is preventable and that prevention should begin in childhood.
The Comprehensive Osteoporosis Program
Once diagnosed with Osteoporosis, your physician may refer you to the Comprehensive Osteoporosis Program. The program includes:
Nutritional Counseling
A registered dietitian is available to provide counseling for challenging nutritional needs related to osteoporosis, such as eating disorders, lactose intolerance, or nutritional deficiencies related to illness. For additional information, ask your physician or contact (231) 935-8200, 1-800-809-8127, or education@mhc.net.
Physical Therapy
Upon referral to Physical
Therapy, you will be evaluated in several areas including posture, strength, and balance. Personalized instruction and an individualized exercise program, to be followed at home, will also be included. A balance program for those who are unsteady and at risk for falls will be implemented if needed. For additional information, ask your physician or contact (231) 935-7331 or 1-800-255-1231.
